Monthly Recap: July 2016

If a month starts on a Monday it inevitably makes me totally positive about it, probably because of the symmetry or something . Anyway, I’m glad about writing my 5th monthly recap and although I’ve been pretty much absent this past month I haven’t lost my pleasure for writing. To be honest I hit something like a writer’s block. You would think that by being on summer holiday and having so much free time I’d write twice as much. I’ve only managed the half amount of posts compared to last month and I’m not quite pleased about it. If truth be told, I’ve had guests over for the past 2 weeks and on the first week I was in Croatia. Yes, I know there was still a week, but until now that was my only true week off. Enough complaining and let’s start this recap already.

Movies I’ve Watched

#554 Me Before You (2016)       Score: 9       14.07.2016

There is rule out there that says you should probably not watch a movie after you just finished the book it is based on because of 2 reasons. It will break your heart into a million pieces again and you will probably end up hating it (or parts of it). I’m a logical person, but after reading the book I decided there is nothing better that I can do than letting the story break my heart for a little longer. That being said I recommend watching this movie (and reading the book duhh) because it touches a very sensitive subject and unlike many movies today it is not about a love story. It’s so much more. I know I couldn’t have sounded more vague, but trust me I cannot say more without spoiling it.

Will Traynor: Live boldly, Clark. Push yourself. Don’t settle. Knowing you still have possibilities is a luxury, knowing I might have given them to you. So, this is it. You are scored on my heart, Clark. You have been the first day you walked in with your sweet smile and your ridiculous clothes and your bad jokes and your complete inability to ever hide a single thing you felt. Don’t think of me too often. I don’t want you getting sad. Just live well. Just live. I’ll be walking beside you every step of the way. Love, Will.

#553 The Polar Express (2004)       Score: 9.5       10.07.2016

I know it’s not Christmas, ok. Have you never experienced the crave for something Christmas-y in spring or summer? Maybe even heard a couple of carols? No? Than I must be a really weird person but I don’t mind it. This is going to be one of my favourite movies to watch on Christmas with the family. It pictures the true meaning of Christmas, believing!

Hero Boy: At one time most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found one Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound. Though I’ve grown old the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.

#552 Zootopia (2016)       Score: 10       09.07.2016

Zootopia, Zootropolis, Zoomania or whatever you wanna call it. A movie that teaches us a little bit about life and what we can do to improve it. Seeing animals instead of humans dealing with bullying, racism, sexism and pretty much our constant daily life does make us see things straighter. The whole movie was fun and very enjoyable, but I’m sceptical on its impact. With all that being said, I still gave it a 10, because up until now it has been one of the best and original Disney animated movie. All the judging came later.

Chief Bogo: Life isn’t some cartoon musical where you sing a little song and all your insipid dreams magically come true. So let it go.

Judy Hopps: Life’s a little bit messy. We all make mistakes. No matter what type of animal you are, change starts with you.

TV Shows

As far as TV shows go, I’ve been watching plenty of it the past 4 weeks. I’ve finally managed to watch the 3rd season of DaVinci’s Demons (2.5 stars) which was agonising. The first season and the first half of the second season were so breathtaking and wonderful I could have easily given the show 5 stars just for those parts. After that though the show took a weird turn, weird in like too much science fiction for me and an entirely unexpected story for Leo that would have made me choose not to watch the show at all from the start. On the brighter side I’ve finished one TV show and one anime that I rated 5+ star and those are Once Upon in Wonderland and Sword Art Online. I can talk about things I don’t like for hours, but when it comes to things I love I often find it hard to find the words. I apologise for that, but do search these 2 beauties and maybe also decide to watch them.

I am also up-to-date with the following shows: iZombie, Pretty Little Liars and Beauty and the Beast; and also continued watching Doctor Who, where I am currently halfway through season 8.

Books I’ve Read

I realised that in the previous recaps I never talked about the books I read, probably because I was planning to review them later on and since that didn’t really happen I decided to comment a bit about them each month. This month I read 6 books in English and 1 in German.

1. Paul van Loon – Das Gruselhandbuch (English: The Spooky Guide) (25.07.2016) 🇩🇪

Following my history teacher’s advise to read more in German, I picked this lovely children’s book about vampires, werewolves, witches, monsters and ghosts. I didn’t learn many new things, but I enjoyed the writing style. What I learned was that Frankenstein’s castle is just 2 hours away from me, where the best Halloween parties take place, that there are cultures that believe in werebears, weretigers, werepanthers and werecrocodiles. I’ve also learned about the witch huntings in the previous centuries which shocked me. I heard of them, but never took much interest in learning more.

If your teacher has gone notably paler recently and you are under the impression that her canines are becoming more pointed, then I advise you to immediately start with the chapter about vampires.

2. J.K. Rowling – Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets (July 17) 🇬🇧

No introduction needed. Before starting the series I was afraid I’d knew how it goes as I watched the movies. Once, my bad memory has proved to be a good thing. I was thrilled to keep on reading and it really felt like I heard the story for the first time.

3. Louis Sachar – Holes (July 16) 🇬🇧

I remember reading the blurb and thinking “this sounds really interesting!”. I was a bit sceptical when I learned it had only 233 pages, but afterwards happily surprised to have fallen in love with the story.

4. Jojo Moyes – Me Before You (July 14) 🇬🇧

I already talked about this so I’ll just give some more quotes.

Sometimes, Clark, you are pretty much the only thing that makes me want to get up in the morning.

Some mistakes… just have greater consequences than others. But you don’t have to let that night be the thing that defines you. You, Clark, have the choice not to let that happen.

5. Paulo Coelho – The Alchemist (July 9) 🇬🇧

This book is gold! My highlight this month. I’ve mentioned it already, but I’ll say it again. This book teaches about to never stop pursuing and believing in your dreams and to keep on fighting for them. If you ever feel down this is the best book for you to get back on your feet.

At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.

The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.

6. Stephen King – Bag Of Bones (July 6) 🇬🇧

7. James Finn Garner – Politically  Correct Bedtime Stories (July 3) 🇬🇧

I’ve read 2248 pages is total, 72 pages a day.IMG_1880-001

Newest Additions To The Bookshelf:

As you can see, I couldn’t keep myself from buying books this month ‘again’. IMG_1878-001

Notable Mention:

Pokémon GO! As you can see bellow I’ve also got the Pokémon fever. I live in a small village so there aren’t many Pokémons around, but every time I go to a nearby city I play this game so hard that my parents are starting to worry. Let me know in the comments if you play it too and how far you got.

On Friday I fly to Romania for 3 weeks, which means I might not write so much or maybe write more. I don’t know yet. As for reading, I guess I’ll finally start reading my digital copies.

P.S. I just realised I forgot to mention that I got my first subscription box this month from LootCrate.

Monthly Recap: June 2016

Hello dear readers. First of all I want to thank my new followers for deciding I’m actually not a waste of time and those who are still following me. Thank you guys! Last month was a pretty good month and I’m glad this one has been even better (I guess you could say I’m getting better in handling everything)

Movies I’ve Watched

My goal last month was to watch at least 5 movies and I ended up with 10!

#551 Addams Family Values (1993)       Score: 9.5       30.06.2016

As a kid I remember watching The New Addams Family and loving it! This movie was a walk down the memory lane. It was beautiful, funny and perfect to watch before a one week summer camp! You thought there’s no one crazier than the Addams family? Then you definitely have to meet Debbie! My favourite part was towards the end of the movie, when Wednesday sabotages a play to tell some harsh truth about the American history and American Dream.

#550 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)    Score: 10     28.06.2016

A new favourite! I loved the book(s) and Roald Dahl is by far one of the finest storytellers. But I’ll warn you. There are two ways of looking at the message of this movie. The naive way would be to say it’s a beautiful story of a young poor boy whom faith finally gave what he deserved. The other one, more or less hidden, (and this is my opinion) is that Mr. Wonka chose all the children and turned them into examples; for Charlie or for us. Now it’s going to get a tiny bit crazy and you might want to skip this bit😂 but I’m a fan of theories and I’ve read a few online (one which claimed Mr. Wonka is in fact George Weasley from Harry Potter, click here if you’d like to read it). My theory is that Mr. Wonka is some kind of deity or Santa Claus, who punishes bad children and rewards the good ones. This movie teaches a lot of lessons and it’s full of puns, for example Violet turns into a blueberry to which her father says “Violet you’re turning violet.”. There’s more from where this came from. There were also songs included and beautifully in my opinion. I could ramble about this movie, but I wouldn’t want to spoil it all.

Willy Wonka: So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it. Thank you.

Oompa Loompas: Oompa Loompa doo-pa-dee doo / I’ve got a perfect puzzle for you / Oompa Loompa doo-pa-dee dee / If you are wise you’ll listen to me / What do you get when you guzzle down sweets? / Eating as much as an elephant eats / What are you at getting terribly fat? / What do you think will come of that?/I don’t like the look of it / Oompa Loompa doo-pa-dee dah / If you’re not greedy, you will go far / You will live in happiness, too / Like the Oompa Loompa doo-pa-dee doo / Doo-pa-dee doo.

#549 Zoolander (2001)    Score: 9    27.06.2016

I know it’s the type of movie you shouldn’t like, but this is exactly the type of comedy that always works for me. I had such fun time watching this and you probably think I’m a weird person, but I don’t care. I also think I might use a lot of Zoolander gifs from now on!

zoolander read minds

#548 Before We Go (2014)   Score: 8.5       26.06.2016

At first I had mixed feelings about it because it’s not the typical kind of movie. It’s more like a short story, with an open sudden beginning and an open end. A lot of questions remain unanswered and if you’re an I-must-know-all-about-it kind of person like myself you might have a problem in linking this movie to the fullest. I would lie if I said I didn’t like it. Chris Evans (my favourite superhero at the moment) plays in it, so he might make it easier to like the movie. It felt very real and I liked that.

This is no perfect. There will always be struggle. You just need to choose who you wanna struggle with. You can’t allow the ones you love to determine how you love.

Brooke Dalton: It’s possible isn’t it? It’s possible that you could meet somebody who’s perfect for you even though you’re committed to somebody else.
Nick Vaughan: I think if you are committed to somebody, you don’t allow yourself to find perfection in someone else.

#547 Not Another Teen Movie (2001)   Score: 8.5   19.06.2016

Here we go again with my bad tastes in movies. Paradies. My guilty pleasure. I’ve watched almost every one and all I can say it’s that I want more. The Twilight parodies will probably be my all time favourites. But back to this movie. I liked it because it was funny, even if it made fun of an other genre I really love, 80’/90′ teen movies, especially Cruel Intentions and 10 Things I Hate About You. Did I mention Chris Evans plays in this too?

Jake: Malik, can you hold my books for me?
Malik: Sure, why not? I am the token black guy. I’m just supposed to smile and stay out of the conversation and say things like: “Damn,” “Shit,” and “That is whack.”

Ricky Lipman: I am *not* going to let you hurt Janey again. Okay? Besides, I love her.
Jake: Well, so do I.
Ricky Lipman: [slight pause] Yes, but I’m the best friend, and I have been in front of her face the whole time, and she just… hasn’t really realised it yet, but she will.
Jake: Well, I’m the reformed cool guy, who’s learned the error of his ways. She’s gonna forgive me for my mistakes, and realise that I really love her.
Ricky Lipman: [pause] Dammit, that’s true.

#546 The Lovely Bones (2009)   Score: 8.5    18.06.2016

“Centers on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family – and her killer – from purgatory. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.” (IMDB synopsis) Directed by Peter Jackson and with a couple of good actors. In my opinion it didn’t go very well. It felt way too long. She dies in the first 15 min and the movie lasts for another 2 hours. I liked the depiction of the purgatory which reminded me a lot of Where Dreams Come True, but the rest of the movies reminded me of Prisoners (which I find better). I’m not 100% recommending it, as it’s got a lot of flaws, but I’d still like to hear what you thought of it.

Susie Salmon: Nobody notices when we leave. I mean, the moment when we really choose to go. At best you might feel a whisper, or the wave of a whisper, undulating down. My name is Salmon, like the fish. First name: Susie. I was 14 years old, when I was murdered, on December 6, 1973. I was here for a moment. And then I was gone. I wish you all a long and happy life.

#545 That Awkward Moment (2014)    Score: 8.5    18.06.2016

As the title already gives it away, this movie was full of awkward moments to which I had to pause, because I felt embarrassed and OMG you should definitely watch this! Zac Efron plays in it. (Apparently I’m promoting the movies more to the ladies)

Daniel: Yeah, everybody knows you can’t call a girl a hooker. Even hookers hate being called hookers.

#544 Superhero Movie (2008)     Score: 6.5     09.06.2016

Ahmm…Remember I said I love parodies. Here’s the exception. “Orphaned high school student Rick Riker is bitten by a radioactive dragonfly, develops super powers (except for the ability to fly), and becomes a hero.” (IMDB synopsis). I loved the Scary Movie franchise, but this was bad, really bad.

Dr. Whitby: So, what brings you here?
Rick Riker: My uncle.
Dr. Whitby: Your uncle brought you here?
Rick Riker: No, he’s gravely injured.
Dr. Whitby: Well, he shouldn’t be driving, then.

#543 The Ugly Truth (2009)    Score: 9.5     08.06.2016

Back to some good stuff. I really, really, really love… no, not cupcakes… Gerard Butler. “A romantically challenged morning show producer is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love. His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result.” (IMDB synopsis)

Abby Richter: [mockingly] I’m Mike Chadway. I like girls in Jello. I like to fuck like a monkey. Don’t fall in love. It’s scary.
Mike Chadway: Yeah, it is scary. It’s terrifying. Especially when I’m in love with a psycho like you.
Abby Richter: I am not a psycho!
Mike Chadway: I just told you that I loved you and all you heard was “psycho.” Well you’re the definition of neurotic.
Abby Richter: No! The definition of neurotic is a person who suffers from anxiety, obsessive thoughts, compulsive acts, and, and physical ailments without any objective evidence of…
Mike Chadway: Shut up! Yet again I just told you I’m in love with you and you’re standing here giving me a vocabulary lesson.
Abby Richter: You’re in love with me. Why?
Mike Chadway: Beats the shit out of me, but I am.

#542 The Age of Adaline (2015)   Score: 9.5      08.06.2016

A very beautiful story with a very original story. A woman struck by lightning that stops ageing. A must watch! I’d say this was my cinematic highlight this month.

Narrator: On December 31, 2014, a taxicab travelled through San Francisco, from Chinatown to Marin. The car carried a single passenger: a woman, her birth name Adaline Bowman, current alias Jennifer Larson. This is the first and last chapter of her story.

Narrator: As the years passed, Adaline credited her unchanging appearance to a combination of a healthy diet, exercise, heredity, and good luck.

#541 Romeo + Juliet (1996)     Score: 8.5     08.06.2016

‘Leo should have won an Oscar for this’

A glooming peace this morning with it brings. The sun for sorrow will not show his head. Go hence and have more talk of these sad things. Some shall be pardoned, and some punished. For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

TV Shows

I’m a HUGE fan of Hannibal. Of course no one will ever be able to beat Anthony Hopkins, but Mads Mikkelsen deserves a round of applause as well. I loved everything about this show. When I learned that the third season was going to be the last (this was last summer and I hadn’t start the season yet) I felt reluctant at first. That feeling that you don’t want something good to be over. This month I decided it was about time to do it and OMG so many emotions. The ending was AMAZING and unexpected perfect for both Hannibal and Will Graham. If you don’t know the story I’m going to try to explain it. (Note: it’s all based on Thomas Harris’ novels). The show firstly introduces us with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), a FBI assistant, who helps catch mass murderers. He’s got a special imagination, meaning that he can think as the killers and knows exactly how they did it. This imagination comes with a price (he has nightmares, sleepwalking etc.). Eventually he is introduced to Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen),  a psychiatrist, who helps him find the killers. Big secret: Hannibal is the killer the FBI is after. The first season is basically detective work. In the second season Will finds the truth about Hannibal and has a big inner conflict. The third season is the climax of the story and takes place in Italy mostly. It’s not something for everyone to watch. It contains a lot of brutality, gore and blood and for this reason I think I kind of lost a piece of my humanity (not sure it before or after). Between meals Hannibal is a pretty nice person and you can have some really cool philosophical discussions with him and you have to either convince him you’re not worth becoming a meal are you’re not yet ready to be cooked. He likes taking care of his soon-to-become meals. In a way to be chosen by him is compliment; he always prepares the food the best way you’d ever imagine and he never throws away any good parts. Very weird thought. Anyway, if you think you’re though enough you should definitely watch it.

Books I’ve Read

  1. William Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet (June 27) A play
  2. Nicholas Sparks – A Walk To Remember (June 21) A book that’s guaranteed to bring you joy
  3. J.M. Barrie – Peter Pan (June 20) A book more than 100 years old
  4. Wylie Overstreet – The History of the World According to Facebook (June 19) A funny book

Monthly Recap: May 2016

Hello everybody and a Happy International Children’s Day for those who celebrate it (a day later)! I’m happy to say that I achieved the goal I set last month and also managed to balance my free-time activities and make time for everything that I wanted to do. 🙂

Movies I’ve watched:

So… this month I only watched 4 movies, which I know is pretty weak, but hey it can’t always be the same (last month there have been 5 and the month before 13. Hopefully I’ll watch more this month #NewGoalSet)

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)  #540       Score: 9.6                  25.05.2016
As a huge superheroes fan this was definitely my cinematic highlight this month. My full review to this movie is here.

Erik Lensherr: Does it ever wake you in the middle of the night? The feeling that one day, they’ll come for you? And your children?
Charles Xavier: I feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul who comes to my school looking for trouble.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)  #539       Score:9.2         20.05.2016

Clare Abshire: Honey, do you know who that is playing with Alba?
Henry DeTamble: That’s Alba.
Clare Abshire: Yes, I know, but who is that with her?
Henry DeTamble: That’s your daughter. She’s time-travelling.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)  #538       Score: 9.6         19.05.2016
I’ve read a lot of comments on this movie from people saying that they shifted back and forth between team Cap and team Stark, which I found quite strange, because I, from the begging to the end, was only on Steve Roger’s side. I was quite disappointed with Tony Stark. Don’t get me wrong, I do have a heart and felt sorry for what he has been through, but felt he lost his superhero spirit. He didn’t seem to want to fight any more and wasn’t really joining the Avengers. You could be thinking ‘And what about Thor or Hawkeye or let’s not forget Hulk. Aren’t they doing the same?’ The answer is yes, BUT Iron-Man has been my one true hero for more than 6 years and seeing him quit fighting and accepting to sign the Hero Registration Act broke my heart. A lot of people seem to think Cap is the ‘bad guy’ now, which is wrong. I think he did the right thing defending his best friend and fighting for the truth.

Captain America: [about Bucky] He’s my friend.
Iron-Man: So was I.

This annoyed me so much. All I wanted to say to Tony was ‘If YOU would have been a true friend, you would have listened and trusted Steve no matter what!’ Breath in, breath out Demetra. It’s just a movie. I’m more enraged by Iron-Man than Donald Trump at the moment, which I know it’s not healthy. ‘giggles’. To put it in a nutshell, the movie was great, even if I had to say goodbye to my hero. But hey, it is a free world and if you are on team Stark that’s fine with me, but never tell me that you would be on team Trump, because that I won’t accept.

Spider-Man:Hey guys, you ever see that really old movie, Empire Strikes Back?
War Machine:Jesus, Tony, how old is this guy?
Iron Man: I don’t know, I didn’t carbon date him. He’s on the young side.

Steve Rogers:This job… we try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody. But if we can’t find a way to live with that, next time… maybe nobody gets saved.

Goosebumps (2015)  #537       Score:9.3         06.05.2016
I didn’t know much about this movie; it was my brother who convinced me to watch and I’m very glad he did. It’s got some big similarities to Inkheart, but it didn’t bother me. It was a nice cozy movie, until Jack Black appeared and all of a sudden it got serious, a bit scary, funny and adventurous all at the same time. The plot idea, although not very original, it’s very appealing; who wouldn’t want his/her book girlfriend/boyfriend to come out of a book?

R.L. Stine: All the monsters I’ve ever created are locked inside these books. But when they open…

TV Shows I’ve watched:

This month has been pretty rich in watching TV shows. I’ve finished watching The Vampire Diaries (season 7), The Originals (season 3), Supernatural (season 11), Elementary (season 4), Once Upon A Time (season 5) and most of them traumatized me and then made me happy again. Oh, how much I love this shows!
Image result for supernatural season 11 poster
I’ve also started watching season 3 from Da Vinci’s Demons, but I’m not as interested in it as I was in the begging. I think is going to far with into sci-fi and that’s not why I wanted to watch it the first place. Anyway, it was cancelled so I just have this one season to watch and then I’ll be over with it. I also have season 3 from Hannibal and from season 8 on from Doctor Who to watch. I hope to finish these 2 this month as Pretty Little Liars and Beauty And The Beast are all starting this month and I wish to focus more on the new seasons.

With the help of this wonderful website I’m now able to keep track of how much time I spend watching TV shows ‘yay’. This month only I’ve spent almost 53 hours watching movies and TV shows.

Movie Review:: “X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)”

I have been waiting for this movie for sooo long and I finally got to watch it on Wednesday. Before you read on, you might want to know I am a HUGE fan of X-Men, superheroes and everything Marvel so it is going to be practically impossible for me to give away any flaws, maybe just some things I did not like. Also I’ll explain why I like this movie more than Captain America: Civil War. Here we go.

Plot

This movie introduces us with Apocalypse, the very first mutant (or a God as he likes to call himself) that has been asleep for thousands of years and is awakened in the 1970s by accident. He is very disappointed with his “children” that they let the mankind rule the world and plans to wipe clean the earth and rebuild it. He basically plans on bringing the Apocalypse on Earth (definitely did not see that coming). Because of the actions in X-Men: Days of the Future Past, the whole X-Men universe has been reset, basically none of the past movies ever happened (which sounds very familiar with Apocalypse’s plan) except for X-Men: First Class ( and the scenes in the past from Days of the Future Past and Origins: Wolverine… but you get what I mean). This ugly dude that has no fashion style builds a small army of 4 ‘horseman’ consisting of Storm, Angel, Psylocke and Magneto to help him with his mission. On the good team we have got Cyclops, Jean Grey, Mystique, Beast, Xavier, Nightcrawler and Quicksilver.

My Opinion (Spoilers)

This movie was FANTASTIC! Quicksilver has become my favourite mutant (sorry Wolverine) and if you watched the movie you understand why. The scene where he saves all the students from the blast, his good tastes in music, his nonchalance and charisma make him the best character in this movie. Also the scene where he kicks Apocalypse’s butt/face was priceless. Apocalypse was pretty much just an ass, because he never gave the world a chance and took advantage of people’s grief and misery. The only good thing about him is his hairstyling skill; Storm and Xavier’s haircuts rock! I felt really sad for Magneto (he did not deserve it universe!) and I wished so much that he knew he still had a son (dang it Quicksilver, you should have said something).
No reason for this picture, besides the fact that it is beautiful! Back to my opinion, I did not think the movie was boring or too long, I think it was balanced. As mentioned above I liked Apocalypse more than Civil War, mainly because prior to the movie I was a fan of Iron-Man and he disappointed me in this movie (I’ll debate more on this topic in the monthly recap). I felt frustrated with the characters and that’s why Apocalypse did (for me) a better job. The scene with Jean Grey aka the Phoenix was marvellous. I can’t wait to see how her story evolves from here. Another aspect of the movie is the after-credits scene, which shows a man taking Wolverine’s blood sample and putting it besides other unknown ones in a briefcase, that has “Essex Corp” inscribed on it.  My opinion on it is that it’s got something to do with Mr. Sinister (and you could guess by the name that he has got some really bad plans with that blood).

Conclusion

I liked this movie A LOT and I think it is the best of its franchise. I highly recomand it (you’re going to have funny, sad, but also serious moments). Looking back I realise it’s got some big flaws, like it doesn’t care about physics, but I’m not the type of person to pay attention to them. MOVIES SHOULD ENTERTAIN YOU, SO TAKE A STEP BACK AND RELAX.

Cover Color Challenge: May – Dark Green / April – Results

  • Link up & have fun!

At first I thought I actually don’t have any books with a dark green cover (I didn’t take HP: The Half-Blood Prince and Inkspell into consideration, since both of them belong to series and none of them is the first novel). After thorough search I found out I own at least 3 dark green books. Considering that last month I planned to read 4 and ended up with only one, this month I just want to read 2 and I’ll be happy.IMG_1171.JPG
There is not much I can say about the first book. The second book, I looked it up, and apparently hasn’t been translated in any language (it’s Romanian by the way). It’s called “Legends of Olymp” and it is the first volume entitled Gods (the second one is called Heroes). Confession: I was supposed to read this in the summer break of 2011. The third book is the Romanian version of “After The Funeral”.

As for the results of my April Cover Color Challenge… well… you know… I only achieved one. ‘one is better than none’ ‘hurray’. I decided that in the coming months I’ll try to read at least one extra book, besides the challenge, that would have fitted a previous month. Mainly I’ll focus on January to March, since there are a few red, purple and light blue books I could get off my TBR list.

Monthly Recap: April 2016

The time of the month has arrived ‘drum rolls’ and I’d like to start off with a confession/ clarification. I mentioned on my “About Me” page that I created this blog for the simple reason of sharing my thoughts. I realised I posted memes more than 25 times this month, which came as a surprise for me. I thought long about how I should present my blog. Some post reviews on books, some on movies, some take part in a great amount of memes. Well, I’m going to to a mixture of all, since I enjoy all equally. What I need to figure out at the moment is finding a balance, considering that this month I only managed to finish one book and watch 5 movies, which made me feel quite disappointed. Sometimes I might join weekly memes, sometimes write about movies or books or sometimes it could be quite for a longer time, I just don’t want to feel the pressure “Oh God, I have to blog!”. Also sometimes I might watch or read something so majestic that I cannot find words to describe it properly. For example “Hidden Fires”. I could talk about this book for hours (and I did with my best friend), but I couldn’t find the essence that I was looking for in my opinion. When I’l encounter situations like this in the future, I’ll feature a short review in my monthly recaps. With that being said, here is what happend this month. (Warning: This post might include spoilers)

Movies I’ve watched:

Paper Towns (2015) #536   Score: 9  26.04.2016
I’ve heard so many good things about the book and I couldn’t resist it any more. Now I’ll have to wait for a couple of months until my memory of the movie gets blurry so I can read the book. Was it worthy? I’m not sure. The ending left me a bad tase in my mouth and I didn’t like Cara Delevingne’s acting. I think she should stick with modelling. The plot was crazy and I loved it. It makes me want to jump in a car with my friends and head for Amsterdam (we actually talked about it, but I’m not certain it will come true ‘fingers crossed’). The movies’s message is inspirational if you interpret it this way “Get out of your comfort zone. Take risks and enjoy life. Carpe diem!”

Quentin Jacobsen: Margo always loved mysteries. And in everything that came afterwards, I could never stop thinking that maybe she loved mysteries so much that she became one.

Brooklyn (2015) #535   Score: 10  25.04.2016
You would guess a movie nominated for the Oscars should be good. It was exquisite. It made me cry. I connected with Eilis, considering I went through a similar situation 5 years ago. I could have easily given it a 9.9 (it wasn’t a masterpiece), if it wasn’t for Eilis’ deceiving character. She should have told her friends and family about her marriage and not fool the poor Irish lad. I have a soft spot for Irish accents and that helped a little in giving the score. All in all, this movie could have won the Oscar (I haven’t watched Spotlight, so I cannot say which one is better).

Eilis: You’ll feel so homesick that you’ll want to die, and there’s nothing you can do about it apart from endure it. But you will, and it won’t kill you… and one day the sun will come out and you’ll realize that this is where your life is.

Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank (2016) #534   Score: 7 12.04.2016
(you might wanna skip this part if you cannot take criticism on sensible subjects)A movie about historical events during WWII we had to watch with our history class. I came in contact with a few works that handle Nazi Germany, The Book Thief and Schindler’s List, both which have made me cry. A lot. Normally I am very critical with stories around Jews, since most of the time the people are over-victimised. This movie is one of them. It felt weird from the start and I didn’t feel much of a connection with Anne.

How To Be Single (2016) #533   Score: 9.5 09.04.2016
This movie I watched with my best friend at the cinema and it was hilarious. We came to the conclusion that Dakota Johnson played a character very similar to the one in 50 Shades of Grey and in How To Be Single we see her after leaving Christian. Also we see Rebel Wilson playing Fat Amy again. Throughout the movie you root for Alice (Dakota Johnson) to end up with Tom (Anders Holm), although you want Tom to end up with Lucy (Alison Brie). You get a lot of mixed feelings.

Robin: In every male-female friendship there’s a total number of drinks and if you hit that it means you would definitely have sex.

Epic (2013) #532   Score: 9 06.04.2016

TV Shows I’ve watched:

Lie To Me

Lie to me

I finally managed to watch the 3rd season and all I can say is that Lie to me is definitely worth watching. Although it was cancelled (at least that’s what I think since they left some unanswered questions), they didn’t finish it off with a cliffhanger. It was delightful for me and I may have even learned a few things. Micro-expression, how to interpret them, basically reading people’s faces. I think it it a very interesting science and I hope I’ll be able to do the same thing later in life.

Steins;Gate

I gave this anime only 3 stars, because it felt really weird at times and I didn’t really liked the main character Rintarou “Hououin Kyouma, Okarin, Mad Scientist” Okabe. You would guess by the nickname “Mad Scientist” that he’s crazy, which is entirely true. Putting that aside I did like the time-travel plot, the female main characters and of course Rintarou’s  never ending search for a way to save his friend.

Books I’ve read:

As mentioned above I only managed to read one book this month, but also started 2 others: “The Yellow Fairy Book” by Andrew Lang and “I Hate Myselfie” by Shane Dawson.

“Hidden Fires” by Sandra Brown
Published (under Laura Jordan): 1982  by Richard Gallen Books
Published (under Sandra Brown): 1997 by Warner Books
296/356 pages

Goodreads description:

As the twentieth century turned, Texas flamed with railroads, ranchers — and a daring new love!
When innocent, raven-haired Lauren Holbrook left her home for a promising life in Texas, she found heartbreak, not happiness, forced into a loveless marriage of convenience to playboy-rancher, Jared Lockett.

Now a victim of Jared’s scheming mother, whose hunger for power and wealth defied the boundaries of human greed, Lauren was unjustly accused of betrayal…threatened by an ambitious investor’s savage lust…and rejected in love by her rebellious husband.

But nevertheless Lauren’s love for Jared grew. She bravely challenged the hate that surrounded Jared’s heart, and offered instead a rapturous passion — a shimmering new dream they could share — if only they could conquer the treachery that ruled their lives.

There is a lot I can say about this book, but I’ll try to keep it short. The main topics of the book are rape and the role of women in the society, but arranged marriage, prejudices and hate turned into love also play an important part. I was surprised by the book and although it took me long to read it I love it from the beginning to the end . It is a beautiful story, like none I’ve read before and it shocked me at times. I don’t really want to spoil it to much, as I want others to read it as well, so I’m only giving some quotes and nothing more.

Once again, she relived the moment when his hand had pressed against her breast. She felt his breath on her face, and tried to imagine how his lips would feel against hers. A long, shuddering sigh escaped her and she moaned into her pillow. She wanted to know what it was like.
And she knew that finding out would bring her perilously close to the brink of hell… or heaven.

Well, I don’t give a damm, he swore. But he did. That was what rankled. He did care, and it ate at his gut every time he saw that Vandiver bastard go anywhere near her.

Lauren was never sure when the thought took form and solidified in her mind, but all of the sudden it was there. I’m in love with Jared Lockett. I love Jared.
