Monthly Recap: May 2016

Hello everybody and a Happy International Children’s Day for those who celebrate it (a day later)! I’m happy to say that I achieved the goal I set last month and also managed to balance my free-time activities and make time for everything that I wanted to do. 🙂

Movies I’ve watched:

So… this month I only watched 4 movies, which I know is pretty weak, but hey it can’t always be the same (last month there have been 5 and the month before 13. Hopefully I’ll watch more this month #NewGoalSet)

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)  #540       Score: 9.6                  25.05.2016
As a huge superheroes fan this was definitely my cinematic highlight this month. My full review to this movie is here.

Erik Lensherr: Does it ever wake you in the middle of the night? The feeling that one day, they’ll come for you? And your children?
Charles Xavier: I feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul who comes to my school looking for trouble.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)  #539       Score:9.2         20.05.2016

Clare Abshire: Honey, do you know who that is playing with Alba?
Henry DeTamble: That’s Alba.
Clare Abshire: Yes, I know, but who is that with her?
Henry DeTamble: That’s your daughter. She’s time-travelling.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)  #538       Score: 9.6         19.05.2016
I’ve read a lot of comments on this movie from people saying that they shifted back and forth between team Cap and team Stark, which I found quite strange, because I, from the begging to the end, was only on Steve Roger’s side. I was quite disappointed with Tony Stark. Don’t get me wrong, I do have a heart and felt sorry for what he has been through, but felt he lost his superhero spirit. He didn’t seem to want to fight any more and wasn’t really joining the Avengers. You could be thinking ‘And what about Thor or Hawkeye or let’s not forget Hulk. Aren’t they doing the same?’ The answer is yes, BUT Iron-Man has been my one true hero for more than 6 years and seeing him quit fighting and accepting to sign the Hero Registration Act broke my heart. A lot of people seem to think Cap is the ‘bad guy’ now, which is wrong. I think he did the right thing defending his best friend and fighting for the truth.

Captain America: [about Bucky] He’s my friend.
Iron-Man: So was I.

This annoyed me so much. All I wanted to say to Tony was ‘If YOU would have been a true friend, you would have listened and trusted Steve no matter what!’ Breath in, breath out Demetra. It’s just a movie. I’m more enraged by Iron-Man than Donald Trump at the moment, which I know it’s not healthy. ‘giggles’. To put it in a nutshell, the movie was great, even if I had to say goodbye to my hero. But hey, it is a free world and if you are on team Stark that’s fine with me, but never tell me that you would be on team Trump, because that I won’t accept.

Spider-Man:Hey guys, you ever see that really old movie, Empire Strikes Back?
War Machine:Jesus, Tony, how old is this guy?
Iron Man: I don’t know, I didn’t carbon date him. He’s on the young side.

Steve Rogers:This job… we try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody. But if we can’t find a way to live with that, next time… maybe nobody gets saved.

Goosebumps (2015)  #537       Score:9.3         06.05.2016
I didn’t know much about this movie; it was my brother who convinced me to watch and I’m very glad he did. It’s got some big similarities to Inkheart, but it didn’t bother me. It was a nice cozy movie, until Jack Black appeared and all of a sudden it got serious, a bit scary, funny and adventurous all at the same time. The plot idea, although not very original, it’s very appealing; who wouldn’t want his/her book girlfriend/boyfriend to come out of a book?

R.L. Stine: All the monsters I’ve ever created are locked inside these books. But when they open…

TV Shows I’ve watched:

This month has been pretty rich in watching TV shows. I’ve finished watching The Vampire Diaries (season 7), The Originals (season 3), Supernatural (season 11), Elementary (season 4), Once Upon A Time (season 5) and most of them traumatized me and then made me happy again. Oh, how much I love this shows!

I’ve also started watching season 3 from Da Vinci’s Demons, but I’m not as interested in it as I was in the begging. I think is going to far with into sci-fi and that’s not why I wanted to watch it the first place. Anyway, it was cancelled so I just have this one season to watch and then I’ll be over with it. I also have season 3 from Hannibal and from season 8 on from Doctor Who to watch. I hope to finish these 2 this month as Pretty Little Liars and Beauty And The Beast are all starting this month and I wish to focus more on the new seasons.

With the help of this wonderful website I’m now able to keep track of how much time I spend watching TV shows ‘yay’. This month only I’ve spent almost 53 hours watching movies and TV shows.

Movie Review:: “X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)”

I have been waiting for this movie for sooo long and I finally got to watch it on Wednesday. Before you read on, you might want to know I am a HUGE fan of X-Men, superheroes and everything Marvel so it is going to be practically impossible for me to give away any flaws, maybe just some things I did not like. Also I’ll explain why I like this movie more than Captain America: Civil War. Here we go.

Plot

This movie introduces us with Apocalypse, the very first mutant (or a God as he likes to call himself) that has been asleep for thousands of years and is awakened in the 1970s by accident. He is very disappointed with his “children” that they let the mankind rule the world and plans to wipe clean the earth and rebuild it. He basically plans on bringing the Apocalypse on Earth (definitely did not see that coming). Because of the actions in X-Men: Days of the Future Past, the whole X-Men universe has been reset, basically none of the past movies ever happened (which sounds very familiar with Apocalypse’s plan) except for X-Men: First Class ( and the scenes in the past from Days of the Future Past and Origins: Wolverine… but you get what I mean). This ugly dude that has no fashion style builds a small army of 4 ‘horseman’ consisting of Storm, Angel, Psylocke and Magneto to help him with his mission. On the good team we have got Cyclops, Jean Grey, Mystique, Beast, Xavier, Nightcrawler and Quicksilver.

My Opinion (Spoilers) (also, you might not understand what I’m talking about if you haven’t watched the movie)

This movie was FANTASTIC! Quicksilver has become my favourite mutant (sorry Wolverine) and if you watched the movie you understand why. The scene where he saves all the students from the blast, his good tastes in music, his nonchalance and charisma make him the best character in this movie. Also the scene where he kicks Apocalypse butt/face was priceless. Apocalypse was pretty much just an ass (excuse my language), because he never gave the world a chance and took advantage of people’s grief and misery. The only good thing about him is his hairstyling skill; Storm and Xavier’s haircuts rock! I felt really sad for Magneto (he did not deserve it universe!) and I wished so much that he knew he still had a son (dang it Quicksilver, you should have said something).
No reason for this picture, besides the fact that it is beautiful! Back to my opinion, I did not think the movie was boring or too long, I think it was balanced. As mentioned above I liked Apocalypse more than Civil War, mainly because prior to the movie I was a fan of Iron-Man and he disappointed me in this movie (I’ll debate more on this topic in the monthly recap). I felt frustrated with the characters and that’s why Apocalypse did (for me) a better job. The scene with Jean Grey aka the Phoenix was marvellous. I can’t wait to see how her story evolves from here. Another aspect of the movie is the after-credits scene, which shows a man taking Wolverine’s blood sample and putting it besides other unknown ones in a briefcase, that has “Essex Corp” inscribed on it.  My opinion on it is that it’s got something to do with Mr. Sinister (and you could guess by the name that he has got some really bad plans with that blood).

Conclusion

I liked this movie A LOT and I think it is the best of its franchise. I highly recomand it (you’re going to have funny, sad, but also serious moments). Looking back I realise it’s got some big flaws, like it doesn’t care about physics, but I’m not the type of person to pay attention to them. MOVIES SHOULD ENTERTAIN YOU, SO TAKE A STEP BACK AND RELAX.

The Liebster Award

I was nominated for The Liebster Award by Diego at lazysundaymovies. Thank you, thank you, thank you ! 🙂 He’s got some of the best movie reviews I’ve ever read and if you don’t agree to that you would still have to admit that they’re some of the funniest. So definitely go check them out!
I learned about this award on my best friend’s blog, Iri, who has already been nominated for 4-5 times (Well, my friend. Be prepared! Another nomination comes your way). I chose to change the rules Diego had on his blog and pick some from Iri’s and because there are 2 nominees from Germany I decided to help them by writing the questions also in German, but be free to answer them in English if you want! 🙂

The Rules:

– Thank the one(s) who nominated you
– Answer 11 questions the blogger gives you
– Give 11 random facts about yourself
– Nominate 11 bloggers that you think deserve this award too
– Give them 11 questions to answer
– Let the bloggers know you nominated them

Diego’s Questions:

1. If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be?
– Diego, you are a very cruel person 😂 and my choice would be “What Dreams May Come”. “It’s not about understanding. It’s about not giving up!” Robin Williams will be, at least for me, always a legend and this movie is the proof for that. Here, have some trailer convince you.
2. If a film was made about your life story, who would you cast to play yourself?
– In a blink of a second I’d first say “Morgan Freeman is to be the narrator”, as for the actress, I’d choose Anne Hathaway.
3. First movie you remember watching?Favourite movie genre?
– Diego, you cheater; those are 2 questions. The first movie I watched at the cinema was Bratz, something I don’t really recomand watching, but I don’t remember any real first. As for the genre, romantic comedies will always win me over, almost as much as superheroes movies do. Shout-out to X-Men:Apocalypse that came out today!!!
4. Favourite movie quote? (I hope you know I couldn’t choose just one)

“Don’t forget I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”
Julia Roberts, Notting Hill (1999)
“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. Poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. (…)No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”
Robin Williams, Dead Poets Society (1989)

5. I normally hate watching movies before 2000’s (except some classics). Recommend a movie that might change my mind.
– If the ones mentioned above aren’t good enough and since the term classic can be vague (each decade has its own) I’ll give you one I hope you’ve never heard of. “Mononoke-hime” or “Princess Mononoke”. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Japanese movies, but this is a “classic” there and in my opinion, worth watching.
6. Favourite TV show at the moment?
Once Upon A Time. It just gets better with each season, considering that they have a lot of stories the episodes can be based on. We’ve had all the Disney Princesses, Rumplestiltskin, Peter Pan, Elsa, Merida, Dr. Frankenstein, Merlin and lately Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, so check it out.
7. Go-to weapon in a zombie apocalypse?
– A bazooka.
8. Would you rather lose both arms or both legs?
– Both legs, since I’m a lazy person anyway and not too much into sports. Also because my favourite activities imply the need of arms.
9. If you could have one power, what would it be?
– To fly.
10. When did you start blogging and why?
– Mid-March this year. My best friend is blogging about books and I wanted to share my thoughts with the world as well.
11. What do you do when you’re not in front of a keyboard?
– I read, watch movies, draw, take pictures and occasionally travel.

Although she didn’t nominate me directly, I liked her questions and decided to update my blog entry 🙂

LUKNE-LUNA‘s Questions:

1. Where are you from? – Romania
2. First cinema experience? – Bratz: The Movie (Avatar was the first 3D movie🙈)
3. Favorite genre? – Romance-Comedy
4. Favorite franchise? – Harry Potter all the way
5. Remakes/reboots – for or against? – The Amazing Spider-Man. To be honest I think it is better than the original. Here is a video to prove it.
6. Favorite movie soundtrack? – Lord of the Rings and of course the Hobbit.
7. Guilty pleasure movie? – Cruel Intentions. I liked the movie so much, although the story holds no good message.
8. A film that you have seen more than 3 times? – I almost never watch a movie a second time, because I always have so many movies that I want to watch, but… I’ve watched Titanic at least 3 times and I would still watch 3 more times.
9. Favorite director? – Tim Burton or Steven Spielberg
10. Favorite foreign language (non-English) film? – Mononoke-hime or Princess Mononoke
11. Favorite movie from the year you were born? – Good Will Hunting
